4 Signs You Need to Replace Your Truck Scale

To keep your business running smoothly, your truck scale needs to provide accurate and dependable weight readings. Here are four signs your scale may need to be replaced.

1.Inconsistent readings

If your truck scale suddenly starts providing vastly different readings for items that are normally the same weight, you should first try power washing it or using an air hose to remove any debris from around the scale. If that doesn’t fix the problem, the scale should be pulled from service and recalibrated by a professional technician. However, if the readings continue to be inconsistent after the scale is recalibrated, it’s probably time to look for a replacement.

2. Unstable readings

Similar to inconsistent readings, if your scale wavers or doesn’t hold steady when weighing, you may need to have it replaced. Unstable readings are usually a result of damage to the scales’ load cells or interior components. These sorts of internal inconsistencies can cause a lot of problems, especially when speed and precision are required. If this is happening to your scale, replacing it is probably the best option.

3. Rust and corrosion

Over time, your scale may start to show signs of wear that can affect its performance. Once a scale’s moving parts or load cells become rusted or corroded, they could malfunction or fail altogether. If you notice significant rust or corrosion that’s eating holes through your scale, it’s best to have the entire system replaced to avoid inaccurate readings or a sudden breakdown.

4. Shock loading

Truck scales can take a fair amount of abuse. However, if they become suddenly overloaded with extremely heavy materials, shock loading may occur. Shock loading affects the entire scale system and could cause your readings to be skewed. Depending on the severity of the incident, your scale may need to be replaced if it’s providing inaccurate data.
